The Pilsner Urquell Story
On October 5th 1842, in the town of Pilsen, a young brewmaster named Josef Groll combined a Bavarian bottom-fermentation process with the finest local and specific ingredients from Bohemia and Moravia in the town’s recently completed state-of-the-art brewery to create the world’s first clear, golden beer.
Since that day in 1842, when it changed the way the world sees beer, Pilsner Urquell, literally "pilsner from the original source", has been regarded by some as the benchmark against which all others are judged.
Pilsner Urquell inspires passion with its taste and quality for brewers and drinkers alike. Traditional brewing methods are still employed today, and while modernisation has occurred throughout its illustrious history, it has never taken place to the detriment of product quality. The specific yeast strain, Saaz hops, Pilsner malt (which became a synonym for pale malt) and soft water still combine with triple decoction, direct heat and a cooler bottom-fermentation process as dictated by Groll in his ground-breaking recipe. Equipment is shiny and modern, but brewing methods have the same basic parameters as they did in 1842.
About the beer

Pilsner Urquell is internationally famous for its unique flavour and superior quality, and it owes its exceptional characteristics to the original production process and outstanding ingredients, and the experience of generations of brewers. Experts have tried to capture Pilsner Urquell’s taste in words coming up with as poetic a description as this: “A uniquely rewarding taste; intensely hoppy, with a balance of subtle sweetness and velvety bitterness, wrapped in a gloriously crisp body”. Putting it simply – Pilsner Urquell is definitely a taste worth acquiring.
Today, as a flagship brand of SAB Miller, Pilsner Urquell has surpassed all previous levels of production and availability, without losing any of the outstanding qualities that make this a truly unique beer.
