The sublime beauty of the milky, torquoise sea cradles a proliferation of humanity and their toys within its warm embrace. Beneath this sublime scene of human fantasy, is the denial of a recognition of the bioloical impact of beach nourishment, the practice used in many countries of depositing sand to increase the size of diminishing beaches, and how the creation of an ‘idyllic’ (utopian) vacation environment is a severely destructive action. Prior to 2012, Waikiki’s water was a crystal clear, lime green, revealing its many reefs. As a result of beach nourishment the sea is now a milky torquoise, the result of a white silt that continues to leach into the water from the sand deposited. This sand has obscured and destroyed the reefs and the marine life dependent on them. Beach nourishment destroys the entire nearshore marine ecosystem affecting birds, nearshore fish, and invertebrates.
