This image was captured in 2014 while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I was at an altitude of approximately 18,900 ft. You can see in this image the melting water that has gathered around the glacier and the exposed dirt where once used to be glacier. All, due to the temperature increases on our atmosphere. Kilimanjaro's glaciers are thought to be 10,000 years old and could vanish by 2030. The northern ice field holds most of Kilimanjaro's remaining glacial ice and has lost more than 140 million cubic feet (4 million cubic meters) of ice in the past 13 years. That's approximately 520 feet on each side or a total of 29% since 2000.
