Completed in 1905 as one of four main buildings of the George Nimmons designed Sears, Roebuck & Company complex, the facility powered the massive 55-acre Sears complex until the company’s 1973 relocation to the Sears Tower in downtown Chicago. The Homan Arthington Foundation spearheaded the creative adaptation of the Power House to classrooms and learning facilities for students drawn from the surrounding neighborhoods. Photography of the Power House began in October, 2006 to capture this captivating space and its contents prior to restoration work. Final photographs were completed the weekend after the grand opening, nearly three years later.
