I dedicate this book to the courageous individuals who stood up to proclaim the need to save our wild places and to the forward-thinking ones who created the National Parks “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” Their consideration for both the environment and for future generations has given us the pleasure of seeing portions of our country as pristine, unchanged and unspoiled as they were long ago. I also dedicate this book to the National Park employees and volunteers of today who work hard to maintain these treasures in healthy condition so that the parks may continue to be a source of solace and peace in our modern world. This book was released in 2016 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the United States National Park system.
