C., 45, was a heroin addict and dealer, and one of the most rebellious of the women’s ward in San Vittore prison in Milan. She took this collaborative self-portrait, alone in a studio I set up in prison, following my instructions on the expression of difficult emotions. After that she was sent to a punitive prison, so she couldn’t continue the self-portrait workshop. The prison director couldn’t believe that she was able to express this mixture of pain and regret, but all the other inmates chose this image as the most representative of the workshop.
