When trying to report the reality of the street community in Victoria, Canada, I found myself confronting some ethical issues. How can I talk about homelessness without exploiting the homeless people? How can I talk about addiction, violence, mental or physical illness, while respecting someone’s dignity and anonymity? It’s with those questions in mind that I started to shoot homeless people’s hands. Throughout the semesters, while doing many of my University assignments on the issue of homelessness, I kept working on that project, trying to compose a fairly representative portrait of the eclectic street community. I shot the hands of many street artists, buskers, beggars, travelers, rebels, activists, preachers, eccentrics, drug addicts, gangsters, people with disabilities, and so on. I chose 5 of them for the present contest. I´m hoping that some of those very simple photos carry history, poetry and humanity, and perhaps some social and political messages.
