After being driven underground by Soviet rule for nearly 80 years, the Russian Orthodox Church has been resurrected to its former splendor. Eager to be reunited with their historical past, millions of Russians have rushed to be baptized. Thousands of ruined churches have been restored to their original opulence, and throngs of young priests faithfully administer to the sick, elderly, poor, and troubled youths. As Russia realigns itself with God, many wonder whether the Orthodox Church will once again become the potent force it historically represented.
