The body of work was done for SOS Children's Villages in and around the city of Gode in Somali Land, the poorest region in Ethiopia. Life is a struggle in this very hot and dry region. With the harsh conditions, specially women's rights are mostly neglected. Education and medical attention are considered a luxury and the devastating tradition of performing female circumcision is still thriving, coursing numerous problem for women all their life. Outside the SOS Village an estimated +95% of all women are circumcised. When children are given a place to stay, food and education, you clearly see how paramount it is. Specially education is the most important thing to give to the children. The three girls photographed, are all living inside the SOS Village and have the chance to live and experience a safe and sound childhood. The shepherd is a woman with 12 children, living with multiple nuisances caused by the circumcision done to her, when she was a child. The three women photographed in a garden, are all making a living as the locals performing female circumcision. Normally the job is inherited from mother to daughter.
