Story

Research suggests that per head of population around 210,000 people are reported missing in the UK alone each year, with worldwide figures running into the millions. Although more than three quarters of cases are resolved within the first 48 hours, some sadly go missing for years or are never found at all; whether it be by choice, or more rarely a forced displacement. The act of putting a face to these statistics aims to bring attention to the fact that real human beings are indeed involved, replacing the absurdity of a mere line up of numbers doing nothing on various databases. This series of work mainly explores reference situations: The possible characteristics, circumstances and experiences of those missing. It also strives to encapsulate frozen moments of recognition within us all, which reflect and place our own primal fears for a loved one's welfare and whereabouts firmly in the foreground; focusing on the fragility of our existence as, in general, we naturally all can fear the worst. In recognizing ourselves within the fabric of this world, full of the stresses and strains of life; we witness that sometimes in the heat of the moment - in abandonment of rational thought - by making a plain wrong choice or turn, harsh reality reveals that at some stage if we don't watch out for ourselves and those around us, we might also find ourselves searching, or amongst, the ' missing '.
