Story

This image is from the beginnings of a project on my niece Vivian. She was born with one arm, as well as some other challenges. Due to love and good care, she is doing very well and growing up rapidly. I became interested in documenting her growth shortly after my sisters first ultrasound that revealed what was going on. Her left arm was not developing. Somebody made a comment to the effect of how awful it was. It caught me off guard, I think due to the fact that I didn't think it was awful. Yes, a child without a left arm is a difficult, challenging issue. Luckily technology is where it is at. Despite the system, there are good doctors out there. Darkness hence, felt not a place to dwell, but rather in hope and persistence. I plan to continue to photograph Vivian and be supportive to Her and my sister Laura. This photograph showing her first prosthetic, with crayons in the hand, depicts the fact that although different, Vivian is a normal child with untold potential. We are all different, challenged and beautiful. We need each other too, and sometimes metaphorical prosthetics of our own. This project is exploring that idea through someone close to me.
