“The Masters,” (2009-) continues my 35 years of portraiture of people who have inspired or influenced me. These new portraits stylistically owe a debt to 16th and 17th etchings, drawings and artworks, Durer to Rembrandt. I’m drawn to their burnished quality, minimal palette, and heightened use of color to invoke the surreal or extra-ordinary. After my negative or digital capture comes substantial darkroom work, and other techniques, hand-coloring to collage --to achieve a portrait embodying a personal quality of each Master--from Warhol, Keith Haring and Alice Walker to Joe Frazier, Gloria Steinem, Robert Frank and scores more.
