Rome, February 2011 Carrying the slogan “If not now, when?”, hundreds of thousands of women gathered in public squares across Italy to call for the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi after the latest in a string of scandals involving the prime minister. The “Rubygate” or “Bunga Bunga” affair, as it is known, relates to allegations that Mr Berlusconi had relations with an underage prostitute and abused his power. Women staged protests in 230 Italian cities, calling for a show of pride in response to the commodification of women’s bodies and rallying against gender discrimination and the subordinate role that women are forced to play in Italian society.
