January 12 2011 commemorated the one year anniversary of the 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti. Leogane was at the epicentre of the earthquake, 90% of the buildings were destroyed and a quarter of the town's population were killed or missing. A volunteer organisation, All Hands Volunteers, was asked by the Mayor of Leogane to construct a memorial to mark a mass grave outside of Leogane cemetery. This memorial became the focal point for the January 12 ceremonies.
