On December 19, 2010, Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko falsified presidential election returns. When tens of thousands of peaceful demonstrators converged on Minsk's main square to protest, they were brutally assaulted by riot police, and the major opposition candidates were beaten and arrested.
