Portland, Oregon is a city defined by its bridges. There are more than a dozen of them. But the city itself is not the only thing defined by those bridges, so are the people that live there. We think of bridges as connecting to geographical locations, but bridges bring together much more than that, and they also create divisions. We use bridges as gathering spots for social outings, we use them for artistic inspiration, tourists flock to see them, and some even use them for home and shelter. This excerpt is a look at five of those bridges and how we interact with them and the varied roles they play in our lives.
