Forced marriages and a lack of education are the main reasons behind a rise in self-immolation attempts among women in Afghanistan. Afghan women in Afghan society are seen as a secondary class, whose rights are dictated to them based on Islamic law and the prevalent traditions. The following pictures represent a series of women who survived self-immolation. The portraits are of daughters and wives of abusive men who became the main reason for their self-immolation.
