A group of young Muslim girls play in the street in front of two slightly older Muslim girls in a small village near the town of Merzouga, Morocco. All these girls lead a fairly traditional Muslim life. The older girls look into the distance, as if looking towards the future, which involves a great deal of time within the home, taking care of their family’s. As the girls get older, they must cover themselves more and more, eventually they will not leave the home without a man escorting them and traditionally covering both head and face. This series explores the freedom in these last years of a young Muslim girls life.
They are now in the stage in-between marriage and youth, in which they must cover only their heads. The younger girls are free to play without any clothing restrictions. They represent the last years of youth, in which they may leave the home without much concern. As the girls get older, they must cover themselves more and more, eventually they will not leave the home without a man escorting them and traditionally covering both head and face. In many small towns in Morocco the woman will not leave the family’s property after they marry. This series explores the freedom in these last years of a young Muslim girls life.
