On January 25, 2011. Millions of Egyptian protesters from a variety of socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the overthrow of the 30-year regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Cairo, Alexandria and many other cities were the scenes of violent clashes that left more than 840 dead and 6000 injured. In Tahrir Square, Cairo ,the anti-government protesters stated that they will not leave the square until Hosni Mubarak resigns. Deadly clashes between anti-Mubarak protesters and pro-Mubarak supporters were held until on February 11, 2011 ,the ''Friday of the Departure'' Vice-President Suleiman announced Mubarak's resignation, entrusting the Supreme Council of Egyptian Armed Forces with the leadership of the country.
