On October 4, 2010, a reservoir containing toxic red alumina sludge in Ajka, Hungary ruptured and resulted in a serious industrial accident affecting numerous surrounding villages. In part, the accident was the result of a much larger region-wide disaster that has resulted from decaying communist-era industry and lack of regulation in the aftermath of the transition to capitalism and a private sector economy following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and communism across the former Eastern bloc.
