Twenty years after leaving my home town, I returned to photograph the places I had grown up in. Nothing very much had changed. This small seaside town appeared to have been in stasis. The whole experience was dream-like and unnerving, as if manifestations of myself as a carefree child or frustrated young adult might appear around the next corner. And so the project quickly evolved and coalesced, until the complex psychological tension many people experience when they return ‘home’ became its central theme.
