Simon Roberts travelled Britain's coastline to celebrate these monuments to Victorian engineering and eccentricity. Pleasure piers were first built in England during the 19th century with the introduction of the railways, which for the first time permitted mass tourism to dedicated seaside resorts. While there used to be about a hundred piers around Britain, but nearly half have been lost and many others are now under threat.
