These images are from the Comcaac Nation (Seri Indians) of Sonora, Mexico. There are hundreds of different face painting designs, and today this ancient tradition is mostly seen during fiestas and cultural events. Four of the most culturally significant traditions are represented in this series ~ the sacred Leatherback Turtle fiesta, the Puberty fiesta, the Deer Dance, and the beginnings of a giant basket called a "Saptim". With a population of less than 800, the Comcaac people, language and culture are considered endangered. The images are part of a long-term personal photo documentary project.
