Sanya was a city in the southern island of Hainan in China. The city became popular in China since hosting the Miss Universe contest in 2004 for the first time. Since then, it had attracted the attention of the affluent Chinese. They now equate it as China's Hawaii. As China continued to produce people with higher income, the new rich in China all seek to visit Sanya and enjoy the beach life. This is fast becoming a status symbol for the Chinese. So on the beach and street of Sanya, you would only meet 1% of are native there, the rest are visiting from the rest of China. Ritz Carlton Hotel there sells their room for as high as US$2,500 a night during the peak Chinese New year season. Many newly rich Chinese just have to go there to have a picture taken at the beach or try to enjoy the beach life even though they do not really have a beach culture.
