The Moi River separates Myanmar from Thailand. It is a narrow river, with the banks from Myanmar to Thailand as short as 100 meters in some stretches of the river. The Karen people live on both side, either as internally displaced people or as externally displaced people. The civil war between the Myanmar government and the ethnic Karens have lasted for more than 50 years, but their plight seemed to have been forgotten by many even though they still continued to face armed hostilities from the Myanmar army. In this portfolio, I look at the daily life of some Karen children to see that in their daily lives their predicament living as displaced people with little food and little chance of employment. In the morning, their parents will take them across the Moi River from the Myanmar side to the Thailand side, and yet their daily routine is just as bleak; picking up trash for food or for things to reuse or sell; playing in villages, idling around, and then bathing in the dirty water.
