Lutien mine is an open cast coal mine in Inner Mongolia, China. The mine had one of the biggest industrial railroads left in the world, with over 50 steam trains operating in the pit. The mine is on the edge of Siberia and in winter temperatures drop to about minus 30. I was particularly fascinated by the working conditions within the mine, and what day to day life was like for ordinary workers in this surreal environment. The railroad was scrapped in 2010, and the trains replaced by modern dump trucks.
