In ‘Building Blocks, Series 2’, mechanical parts are subtly reconfigured to result in patterns that are suggestive of living systems. In ‘Heart’, the suspension system of a Tate & Lyle freight train is multiplied and combined to arrive at an industrial-like design that is robust yet fluid, daunting yet gentle. As a whole, the series begins to envision the future integration of industry, technology and biology. The work is intended to visually articulate the intricacies, resiliencies and possibilities of our physical world; while also, evoking a sense of transience and alluding to the intensity of that which we seek to accomplish in a short time.

Story

Inspiration for this series is rooted in the work of scientists such as Janine Benyus, who encourages us to learn from the genius of the natural world. The photographic medium is fundamental to the work, as it supports viewers’ belief that what they are observing is possible.

“To give rise to the world we know, enormous forces have to almost exactly cancel each other out, like the two sides of an evenly matched tug-of-war. For the physicist, this means that negative and positive charges have to just balance. For the yogi, that the pure power of consciousness holds itself back from creating every possible world at once, in order to allow something more definite and concrete to emerge.” (Tom Weaver,The Original Light, Ascent Magazine, Spring 2009)
