What appears to be streaking across the frame is, in fact, a particularly energetic looking specimen of the pinwheel protea. The attitude and gesture of this subject would be intriguing enough, but the structures and textures, not to mention the colors, puts it over the top. It's also important that the black field be not merely a backdrop, but that the subject is indeed immersed in it–as though its in a fluid environment. There is no deep spiritual meaning to this. Just awe.
