I recently visited Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh. A former high school, this complex was used by the Khmer Rouge to torture and kill ~20,000 people. After being forced to sign “confessions” for made up crimes, prisoners were slaughtered and buried in mass graves known as The Killing Fields. Over two million people died under the Pol Pot regime between 1975-1979, almost 1/4 of the population of Cambodia. Justice is finally being sought now over thirty years later through a UN war crimes tribunal. Survivors feel that educating people worldwide about this issue could help raise awareness.
