As a species, mankind can be preoccupied with its own imminent destruction. Newspapers revel in their role as merchants of fear, apparently delighting in any apocalypse heading our way and countless internet pages are devoted to this cult of catastrophe, whether it’s the Mayan calendar or Nostradamus’ gloomy predictions.
