Me, You, and MacLehose is an odyssey depicting the challenges of hiking all 100 kilometers of the MacLehose Trail, climbing over Hong Kong’s highest peaks, battling the unpredictable weather, and completing the journey despite physical injuries and equipment failures. I act as viewer and creator along this journey, providing first-person accounts of what I see as well as self-portraits documenting my interactions with the landscape. Frank Gohlke once said, “As a photographer, I am committed first of all to the clear description of the view from where I stand.” This is relevant to the intentional decisions I make on when, where and what to photograph at any given moment along my journey. I also believe the inclusion of myself within my photographs make them more personal, allowing the viewers to imagine themselves in the situations I’ve depicted.
When I first began my hike I was a foreigner trying to understand this new and exciting landscape, but by the end I had established a friendship with the trail - I no longer saw or felt any separation between the landscape, the photographs, and myself.
