In 1730, Laguna del Cañizar was drained to supply additional land for agriculture and to fight against malaria, which was epidemic in Spain at that time. In 2006, local villagers and volunteers began to restore the lagoon. When finished, the lagoon will be the second-largest freshwater lagoon in inland Spain.
