Kalapana Village existed for over a century as place where the traditional Hawaiian lifestyle was the norm. The Hawaiian families all knew each other and helped each other survive in this slice of land between the volcano and the sea. Lack of modern utilities did not hold them back, as they knew how to live without them. Water came from rain, food came from the earth and fish from the sea. The "end of the road" came for them when the volcano from above the village spewed lava for some 20+ years and topped this lively village with 60 feet of rock hard black lava.

Story

Kalapana Village existed for over a century as place where the traditional Hawaiian lifestyle was the norm. The Hawaiian families all knew each other and helped each other survive in this slice of land between the volcano and the sea. Lack of modern utilities did not hold them back, as they knew how to live without them. Water came from rain, food came from the earth and fish from the sea.

Kalapana was know to the bigger world for the world class musicians that it produced. Led Kaapana, Ned Kaapana, Denis Pavao, Tina Kaapana and slack-key master Fred Punahoa. While their village is gone, their musical influence continues.

The "end of the road" came for this idyllic place when the volcano from above the village spewed lava for some 20+ years and topped this lively village with 60 feet of rock hard black lava. While the village structures were destroyed, the spirit of the people of Kalapana continues.
