Agbogbloshie, or 'Sodom and Gomorrah' as nicknamed by the locals, is a large township in the capital of Ghana, Accra. Over recent years, the population of this site have responded to the western world’s obsession with electrical equipment by transforming the site into a electronic waste salvage site, processing some millions of tonnes of electronic waste produced worldwide every year. The industry, although relatively lucrative for those involved, does also carry with it serious environmental problems, with the breaking down and burning methods used to salvage such equipment releasing a cocktail of harmful chemicals into the air, water and ground.
