Briddhashram is the only elderly home operated by His Majesty’s Government in Nepal. The Center was originally founded in 1882 during the regime of His Majesty Surendra Vir Vikram Shah. The residents of the Briddhashram rely on local and international volunteers to help with daily routines that include washing, eating, and walking due to their disabilities. Their disabilities range from dementia, down syndrome, blindness, to clubfoot, old age, and various amputations. Many have had their families abandon them due to an inability to financially support them, or the social stigmatism that results from having a disabled elder in the family.
