These photographs are part of a series I've been working on for many years involving long exposures of people around the city at night. I use 4x5 color negative film which is well suited for this application because of the combination of low sensitivity, reciprocity failure and small aperture relative to digital alternatives. Using film and a view camera I'm able to create surreal nightscapes of the city and its inhabitants going about their business in a way that removes the subjects' identity and leaves the viewer detached on a personal level from what would otherwise be familiar social scenes.
