An illegal charcoal furness in Minas Gerais , Brazil. The state of Minas Gerias holds the largest number of charcoal furness in the world and most of the charcoal is sent to the state capital of Belo Horizonte. The wood to fuel the industry is eucalyptus which is harvested in huge monoculture expanses in the Cerrado savannah which is the richest savannah on earth. The Cerrado is under great threat from eucalyptus and other monocultures with only 20% of the savannah still intact and only 3% protected by the Brazilian government. The eucalyptus is particular destructive as it needs great amounts of water for its rapid growth which in turn drains local water supplies.
