Kinetic image embedded within 3D optical illusionary effect. Overhead projection of Miro onto waving hand. That image is then embedded into enhanced treatment of Hubble image of starfield.

Story

Here I synthesize a number of new ways of thinking about and creating images.

1) creation of kinetic images using projection of found images onto transient media. The resultant image subverts the intent of the original image. For example, Miro, projected onto my moving hand, comes alive as a being or presence. This generates a number of questions such as: What is the meaning of an image? Who is the author? What are its physical and temporal boundaries? Does recording the transient image subvert the image?

2) I have also been interested in extending the realm of 2D images to include not only motion, but another (third) dimension as well. I stumbled across this 3D effect (as in the images when viewed for 30-60 seconds) in the last few days. The original idea was to merge unrelated images, one of which had an amorphous structure (to allow the unconscious a chance to project (like a Rorschach test) when collaging). I was shocked to discover that the collage creates an illusion of depth due in part to the contrast between the stars and the black background and because of the very high resolution of the starfield image. (Original unenhanced starfield image courtesy Hubble Space Telescope. I enhanced sharpness, contrast and structure).

3) For me, there is something primordial about Miro's paintings. I believe collaging with images such as starfields amplifies that effect.
