The series Die Milchbriefe (engl. The Milk-Letters) deals with the process of memory falsification - the unknowingly transformation of memory contents. How much can we trust our memories? What we experienced during our childhood and adolescence, gets overlaid with collective impressions, e.g. from movies we’ve watched, books we’ve read or stories we’ve been told. Unnoticed, visual alienations crept into our memories. The term Milchbriefe is etymologically based on a mid age term for the absolution of the Christian abstinence law; associatively interpreted, milk symbolizes purity as well as archaism, strongly connected to childhood and growing-up. Just like “letters from the subconscious”, the twenty analogue photographs of the series transmit the memory images into the present.
