«They came one night without warning. They started to occupy the walls in silence, adopting flexible positions, changing from wall to wall every night or keeping the position on the same wall for days as if they were pure motionless paintings. Nobody knows where they come from, what they want, who they are. They are just there, occupying Helsinki as an invasive presence, as modern monsters, as giants without a face or a voice. Alarming threat or hallucination, they come and go in the background of the city and in its memory, in its imagination.» The series called The Occupation of Helsinki (2012) is a metaphorical fiction, built from several elements of Finland and Europe’s recent history. It can be seen as an allegory describing from a certain point of view the world we live in. But it can also be seen from a more intimate point of view, as the revelation of an inner world made of secret and independent movements, of weird dreams and nameless and formless fears, about to emerge.
