Aleppo: On War’s Edge More than nine months after rebels launched their surprise offensive into Aleppo, Syria’s largest city remains a key battleground in the grinding civil war. Once considered a stronghold for President Bashar al-Assad, Aleppo is now mired in a deadly stalemate, as rebel and regime forces wage constant battle and Assad’s warplanes sow terror overhead. In the background, meanwhile, even life’s most basic tasks, such as buying bread, often turn deadly, as civilians engage in a daily struggle to go about their lives. The photos in “Aleppo: On War’s Edge” present an intimate look at the rebels’ desperate fight, while opening a window onto the precarious existence of Aleppo’s residents, as trash piles high and children play amid the ruins of what was once Syria’s vibrant and bustling commercial capital.
