Half Moon Island, Antarctica - summer temperatures just above freezing melt the winter ice at the shoreline, revealing the black volcanic sand ... half of a whale jawbone, a remnant of the Rendering Factory abandoned almost a century ago, bleached by Antarctic wind, ice and snow, carried by ice sheets for 9 months at a time, deposited for the summer -- it will start moving again when the ice forms in a few weeks, once more connecting the mountains to the open sea ...
