Familiarity crept around the trunk of my grandparents’ massive orange tree, the old boilers, grandma’s decorative trinkets, the dilapidated walls, and all arcane. There was an overarching sense of belonging without understanding and although I can count the number of times I’ve visited my abuelitos in Guadalajara, Mexico with one hand, there are things numbers cannot define. These excerpts are from a series detailing my grandparents’ home, the place my father grew up, and so, where I somatically come from. At the center is my grandmother, whose thoughts fluttered in the winter air while I photographed her.
