Story

MISERERE MEI
The Easter procession of the dead Christ of Orte, takes place every Friday before Easter in Italy, and it is the oldest of its kind in Italy.
Dating from the early thirteenth century, it has preserved its original form, a mournful and devoted procession, that accompanies Christ at the burial.
The procession involves the participation of the nine current Brotherhoods of Orte. The oldest of them is the Holy Cross, which we have evidence of its presence in Orte since 1159. About 500 brethren participated at the procession.
The carrying out of the procession follows ritual rules that must rigorously have respected.
The whole city is to the dark, only the light of the torches illuminates the passage of the brotherhoods.
The silence is broken from the trailing of the heavy tied up chains to the barfoot feet of the cireneis, curved under the weight of a heavy cross.
