Nesting is about building homes and establishing identities. I became interested in ‘nesting’ after the massive 2011 earthquake in Japan, where I’m from. Though I'd been living abroad for years, and it had started to feel more like home than the place where I'd grown up, the disaster made me realize how isolated I was in London. I felt stuck between two cultures, like I didn’t belong anywhere. But this is something everyone goes through: trying to fit into new environments, constantly becoming new people. My series reflects our layered identities and the ways we all try to fit in.
