THE WILD Asia 2012 The wildness of earth forms the subject for this series of photographs. Perfect line, colour, texture and contrast are all combined as artworks. I had been in Asia for some time and recorded the beauty of the stretched out landscapes through which I travelled. I transcribed the open nature of beauty to a conceptual aspect of human need. What does humans need from the earth? Mainly to control nature and extract wealth from it. The places in these photographs are not controlled by humans, they are not overused. The population is risking their lives by living here. Earthquakes can trigger tsunamis and then there is the further risk of avalanches, floods and mudflows. These disasters can destroy everything manmade. That is why this wilderness is so special (and not overpopulated). This self-sustaining population lives in happiness. I recorded a part of their reality and transcribed it to a collage (a composition of a repetitive picture added four times into one final image). The vast openness of these spaces gets caged in when they are photographed and I intensified this effect by copying a picture three times. In this way the aspect of control is reinforced . I find this techniques to be the only way of controlling nature's wildness. It bares the contradiction - controlling something uncontrollable by nature. This concept crystallized from my experiences during my travels in Asia. At a time we were in real danger of a possible tsunami last year in Andaman & Nicobar Island, after a very strong earthquake hit nearby in Asia. A couple of weeks later, I was only a few kilometres from devastating mudflows in Annapurna where people died. To be part of this wildness, you have to understand it and take risks. You will feel out of control and this make you realize how we are constantly trying to control our surroundings every single day. Over here you can not and this brings you close to the essence of life. www.guillandphotography.com
