Cash-strapped Greece has leased to El-Dorado, a Canadian company, one of Europe’s largest goldfields. Their goal to transform the country into the #1 gold exporter in just four years. Even though the company promises 1.500 jobs, a number that seems big when there's 30% unemployment, locals and environmental groups are worried about the pollution coming from the mining activities and are trying to block the expansion. In Northern Greece, there have been fierce clashes between protesters and police. Amidst the unique forest of Skouries, where trees are being cut down in order to create an open minefield, police threw tear-gas and beat up protesters. Locals having seen the pollution caused by the more than 50 years of mining from Greek and foreign companies, are continuing fighting the investment.
