Brent Cross in North London is home to the UK’s first stand-alone shopping centre, opened in 1976. However, much of the area has not moved on since then – it has only decayed. Brent Cross today has become the strange meeting point where disadvantaged social conditions and the symbol of shopping culture collide. There is little glitz and glamour left in this environment of urban corrosion; consumer culture may promise much, but it doesn't always deliver.
CY Frankel (b.1982) is a London-based photographer. He was awarded a first-class honours degree in Photography in June 2012 and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Photography at Middlesex University, London. Fascinated by the indexical quality of photography, he is particularly interested in the ways in which documentary photographs are used to try to accurately describe the world or tell a ‘truth’. His current practice addresses the overlap between documentary and conceptual photography, testing the extent to which the medium can be used - somewhat paradoxically - both as a means of expression and as a way of portraying reality.
