SOS Children's Villages, a provider of quality alternative care for children who cannot live with their biological families, asked me to go to Mali and photograph the important work carried out by the organization. Due to the dire situation in the country, where the north part had fallen into the hands of rebels, organizations like SOS Children's Villages are dealing with an unusual high number of children left alone and abandoned by their parents, who have become casualties, because of the conflict. The most important people within the organization are the women, who become the new Mothers for the children saved by SOS. The little girl sitting on the bed is such a child. Arriving at a SOS Children's Village with no name or history, her parents fate are unknown, her "new" Mother named her Fatima. The name Fatima means "the shining one" and is indeed the name of Mohammed's favorite daughter
