Story

'Memorial to Memorial', 'Camouflage', and 'Mt. O-Sung' are all part of the project entitled ‘Camouflage’. My work has primarily involved assimilating the everyday aspects of a specific figure, and through moments that I captured those life stories begin to suggest a new perspective that connects the past with the future. Along with the repetitive circulation of contradictions, memories are transformed. Since a trip to the border between the South and the North in the winter of 2009, I have visited and documented monuments dedicated to the divided Korea, which are now being replayed along the DMZ borderline as if they were kaleidoscopic images, rearranging themselves into a certain type of pattern. After visiting the area several times the artist finally came to see an intersection between the clandestine daily routines of the outsider (tourists) and the insider (soldiers and local residents) who happened to come across the arbitrary fate of the ‘division border’, which was ironically quite unconnected to the political climate or other significant current issues. The images of monuments are turned into patterns which are then turned into clothes, and they then move freely into the northernmost part South Korea, camouflaged along with the people on the site. The Camouflage project is a roving memorial and a camouflaged present day, created from fragments of long-standing questions posed around the relationship between the public and the individual, between history and the individual, and between ideology and the individual.
